The Portland Observer is reporting (4/30) that ridership on the bus system is soaring, but the unexpected surge in the price of diesel (TriMet budgeted 2.31 a gallon; it is now paying 3.75$) has forced the organization to put off buying more buses, and to cut costs in general. Also, fares are going to increase soon. Of particular note to us is the article’s assertion that [the] 6-Martin Luther King line… [has] seen more than double the city’s average passenger increase lately.” Anyone who rides the 6 regularly knows it’s always been quite crowded, and the need & demand for more buses on this route has been apparent for some time.
