The Dirty Little Secret salon pictured below closed up at the beginning of the month. It’s been in the “Boxlift Building” at 1909 NE MLK for several years, leaving a second storefront on the MLK side of the building empty (with the move of Straight Blast Gym to a different location). Only the club Dunes remains on this side of building.
The remainder of the building is artists’ studios and workspaces, known collectively as 333 Hancock (the address of the side door that these spaces are accessible by).
The Hollywood Star newspaper tells us that this building is called Boxlift because “In the 1920’s, an auto dealership was housed at the site, and a boxlift was used to convey heavy cases between floors. Although ownership changed and restoration occured over the years, the boxlift always remained. When new management took over in 2006, the tenants decided to highlight the unique feature by naming the space the Boxlift Building.”
